The BSA is here to help graduate students successfully apply for Residency for Tuition Purposes. It is important to get started on this process as soon as you arrive in Chapel Hill, as you need one year of residency before you can apply.
Please read the guides provided, and then contact us ([email protected]), Melissa Hobgood ([email protected]), or Veronica Stallings ([email protected]) if you need individualized counseling, including a review of your statement.

As budget cuts continue to plague the University, it’s more important than ever for graduate/professional students and their departments to apply for Residency.
There are three main stages to this process:

BEFORE the start of class this year (Aug. 20th), take care of: license, insurance, library card, register to vote and anything else that is listed or that would have your address listed... you need to get all of the above listed before Aug 20th. - Veronica
More Info on Car Registration and drivers license exam:
If you bring a car from out of state, you will need to switch your registration and plates to North Carolina within 90 days. Unfortunately, this is both expensive and inconvenient. You’ll need to go to the NC DMV in Carrboro Plaza to retake your written drivers’ exam (I’m not kidding) and get a NC drivers’ license. Then, you’ll need to drive to the east side of Chapel Hill to register your car and get a NC license plate (210 S. Estes Drive, Suite 137 – it’s in this little shopping mall). You will have to pay some fees along the way, and each year you need to have your car inspected. This can be done at any service station in Orange County. Car insurance is mandatory in NC. Talk to older graduate students about the best places to insure your car.
